You see what I did there? You know the Gwen Stefani song Hollaback Girl, right? At the end of the song they shout It’s bananas B-A-N-A-N-A-S. I bet you sang that when you read it. Don’t mix things up though. We’re not talking about bananas today. We’re talking about the incredible batana oil.
Batana oil is extremely rare as the process to produce it is labor intensive and for the most part done manually. However, the process is more than worth it. Did I mention it’s INCREDIBLE? It is found in the rainforests on the northeast side of La Moskitia, Honduras. The oil is extracted from pine nuts of the American oil palm tree. Also known as Elaeis oleifera, the American oil palm tree is native to tropical Central and South America.
As denoted by HealthyHuemans.com, “Each tree produces from 10 to 20 very large bunches of fruit each year, from which 2 to 4 liters of raw oil can be extracted. The fruit is boiled and then pounded to remove the orange outer shell. The nuts are washed, sun-dried and cracked using a stone to release the kernel. These are cooked over a fire until the oil is extracted. Finally, the hot oil is poured into glass bottles where it cools into a thick paste.”
The Indigenous Miskito Indian tribes in Honduras harvest the batana oil. Miskito people are commonly called “Tawira,” which means “the people of beautiful hair.” They credit the beautiful look, length, strength, feel and color of their hair to the use of batana oil and call it “Miracle Oil.” According to Wikipedia, “The Miskito are an indigenous ethnic group in Central America, of whom many are mixed race. In the northern end of their territory, the people are primarily of African-Native American ancestry; others are of mixed African-Native American and English descent. Their territory extends from Cape Camarón, Honduras, to Río Grande de Matagalpa, Nicaragua, along the Mosquito Coast, in the Western Caribbean Zone. Their population is estimated at 180,000 people as of 2016.” They have discovered many benefits of utilizing batana oil.
